Depending on the number of entries, the players will be drawn into either 8 groups or 4 groups on the basis of their ranking position on the latest World Ranking List prior to the event.

For an entry of up to 23 players, there will be 4 groups of 4 or 5 or 6 players.  For 24 to 32 entries, there will be 8 groups of 3 or 4 players.  If there are more than 32 players, there will be 8 groups of 4 or 5 players.

If there are 4 groups, players finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in their groups will qualify for the second stage.  Players finishing 4th and below are eliminated.

If there are 8 groups, players finishing 1st in their groups will qualify for the second stage, while players finishing 2nd in their groups will play an extra knock-out qualifying match to qualify for the second stage.  Losers of these qualifying matches as well as those finishing 3rd and below are eliminated from the tournament.
